About Vranduk

Dating back to the middle ages, the town of Vranduk was one of several royal cities, and was the seat of the last Bosnian king Stjepan Tomaš, as well as his opponent Radivoje. For 600 years, the city and its ever-vigilant fortress were known as the “Gate of Bosnia”. Built on a rock overlooking the Bosnia river.

02

History

Vranduk became a royal city and spa town until it was occupied by the Ottomans in 1463.

During Eugene of Savoy’s campaign in 1697, the city was considered difficult to conquer, prompting Savoy’s forces to avoid a direct attack.

In the 18th century, the city transformed into the seat of the Vrandučka captaincy, and during this time, the fortress served as a prison for political criminals.

03

Fotress

Vranduk Fortress was built at the end of the 14th century, in the parish of Brod, one of the seven parishes of medieval Bosnia.

Its location over the strategic pass of the Bosna River made it a key defensive stronghold for the Kingdom of Bosnia.

The name "Vranduk" comes from the word "branduk," meaning to defend, reflecting its military function from the very beginning.

04

Mosque

Sultan Mehmed Fatih Mosque is one of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s oldest mosques, and its uniqueness stems from the fact that, due to space constraints within the Vranduk fortress, it is positioned just outside the fortress’s walls.
